Grant Maxfield

Grant Maxfield is a photographer based in Minneapolis, working at the intersection of portraiture, interiors, and the overlooked textures of everyday life. His practice is rooted in the Midwest — its light, its quiet, its accumulation of small, unremarkable details that resist easy narrative.

Working across medium-format film, digital, and whatever is closest at hand, Maxfield is less interested in genre than in a particular quality of attention: images that hold nostalgia without sentimentality, and intimacy without performance. Weddings, editorials, campaigns, and independent bodies of work are treated as the same essential problem — how to make a photograph feel lived-in rather than staged, honest rather than composed.

His images occupy the space between control and accident. Direction is present, but so is the willingness to let a moment happen on its own terms. The result is a body of work that reads as documentary in spirit, even where it is commercial in origin — drawn to interesting people, worn spaces, and the kind of detail that only announces itself in retrospect.
